Frequently Asked Questions

What Is #BeBrainPowerful®?

Brain health is incredibly important for women and men of all ages to prioritise. We need to take time to both stimulate and rest our brains in ways that allow us to maintain our brain health throughout the entire span of our lives.

The #BeBrainPowerfu®l campaign brings awareness, community and research together to address one of the world’s most pressing healthcare challenges — dementia and cognitive decline. We believe brain health is incredibly important for women of all ages to prioritise as women with dementia outnumber men 2 to 1 around the globe.

In Sweden, more than 160,000 Swedes are currently living with dementia and is estimated to cost at least 63 billion SEK per year. The Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare, Socialstyrelsen, predicts that 270,000 individuals will live with a diagnosed dementia by the year 2030.

What Is cognitive decline?

Cognitive decline is a term used to describe a condition where problems such as memory loss, decision-making difficulties, inability to concentrate, and learning difficulties affect a person.

These conditions can range from mild to severe, and dementia is one of many causes for long-term or permanent cognitive decline.

Why focus on women?

Across all regions of the world, dementia disproportionately affects women because they are more likely than men to develop dementia in their lifetimes. One of the leading suggestions for the higher prevalence of dementia among women is the longer life expectancy of women.

Regardless of the reasons, dementia is one of the top 10 global causes of death for women. Caregivers also tend to be women as internationally they represent, around two out of three primary dementia care partners.

There is a need for further research and advocacy into the impact of dementia on women to understand an overlooked majority.

How does that effect me?

By aligning with Risk Reduction methods, based on the groundbreaking FINGER study, you can become empowered to prevent or delay cognitive decline through lifestyle changes, over time. In addition to positive effects on cognition, significant positive effects related to other chronic diseases were seen by introducing lifestyle interventions and modifications and encouraging individuals to track and manage their own health. The more you know now, the better you are equipped to maintain a healthy brain. It is never too early or late to increase brain health awareness, so take charge of your brain just as you would with your workouts and healthy meals.

What do I have to do?

By participating in #BeBrainPowerful®’s 30 Day Health Challenge on the Geras Solutions app, Swedish women (and men) have an unprecedented opportunity to collectively contribute to the body of research, focused on cognitive decline, while strengthening their brainpower.
The 30 Day Health Challenge is generously hosted by our partners at Geras Solutions free-of-charge. Sign up with your information and follow the challenge. Learn more about how small changes in your daily activities can add to your cognitive health.

How does my participation help?

Alzheimer’s disease was first discovered in 1907 by German Psychiatrist Dr. Alois Alzheimer. Modern neuroscience and understanding in cognitive decline is still quite new, and there is no cure as of today. To work towards a cure, scientists need a lot of data to work with, while learning more about those impacted by cognitive decline. They also need to understand the habits of healthy people and those individuals who might be at risk.
By downloading the Geras Solutions app, you are contributing directly to Finger Brain Health Institute’s research. Ultimately, by prioritising your own brain health, you will also be helping scientists gain new insights and perspectives. What could be better than that?

I’m not a woman. Can I get involved too?

Yes, please! The more who participate in the campaign, the better the odds of finding solutions and furthering scientific understanding! Men and women of all ages are welcome to join in and participate for free!

What else can I do to help?

Thanks so much for your engagement with this question! We love it when people are enthusiastic! If you are thinking of going above and beyond, please consider donating to Sweden’s Alzheimerfonden and their excellent work in funding research focused on diseases that lead to cognitive decline in Sweden.
